Adults and Dental Braces

As braces have become less bulky and less visible in recent years, more and more adults are using them to correct problems with their teeth or jaws before they cause more serious issues. Others want to improve their appearance, correcting cosmetic problems that have been bothering them for quite some time, sometimes since childhood. It is important to keep in mind that even aesthetic problems can cause real health issues over time. Teeth and jaws that are not aligned properly can lead to premature wear, advanced dental caries and gum diseases. Some of these health issues will require dentures or even reconstructive and extensive surgery.

Most adults are now increasingly turning to braces to correct one of the following problems (talk to Dentist Vaughan or your dentist for more details):

  • Gaps between teeth

  • Compressed teeth (crowding)

  • Open or cross bite

  • Misaligned teeth

If you think you can benefit from adult braces, discuss your concerns with Dentist Vaughan or your dentist and also whether he or she needs to refer you to an orthodontist - dentist who specializes in treating teeth that are not aligned properly. The dentist or orthodontist will examine your teeth and may study the supportive bone structure. Based on what the dentist or orthodontist finds, a treatment plan will be recommended. While braces are a very common option for repair misaligned teeth, the dentist can tell you if in your case it would be better to wear a removable brace.
