The complaining of this age group is that the lack of teeth makes it difficult to chew and therefore the ingestion of liquids or semi-solids are also compromised. Another complaint is dryness in the mouth that may be linked to numerous problems of the digestive area.
Dentists at the University of Toronto, studied 225 people with an average age of 83 years and who lived in a non-independent houses and were submitted to two tests: Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and an abbreviated form of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) - this last test evaluated the level of stress and satisfaction with life. A third of respondents considered the level of oral health average or worse and 20% felt very inadequate. Once applied GOHAI, 53% reported social and psychological problems due to teeth and the OHIP-14 only 17% had these conditions.
The authors conclude that these tests measure properly the quality of life related to oral area and even the elderly can properly evaluate this deficiency. (Participated in the study 201 people, toothed, with 60 years or older, functionally independent, who attended a local health centre. A questionnaire was applied and the index Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), and a clinical examination. Clinical examination revealed a high prevalence of major oral diseases, while 42.7% of people assess their oral health status as fair. The author came to the conclusion that the perception of oral health had little influence on the clinical conditions and the need to develop preventive and educational actions for the elderly population.
